Oklahoma State University
Inspired by a real person named Frank Eaton, Oklahoma State's mascot took the name Pistol Pete as a symbol of his persona. According to the school's website, Eaton earned the nickname Pistol Pete after beating out many cavalry competitors in a marksmanship contest. Because of his shooting skill and time spent as Deputy Marshall, Eaton's title as a cowboy emerged. And thus, the school's nickname was born.
